JK BMS Smart Sleep: What the Voltage and Time Settings Do
Smart sleep lets a JK BMS switch itself off when the battery sits idle, so the board stops drawing power from the cells. It goes to sleep when the cell voltage is below the smart sleep voltage and the current stays under about 1 A for the smart sleep time, 24 hours by default. A sleeping BMS has no output and no Bluetooth until you wake it with the power button, the display switch or a charger. If your battery has no way to wake it, turn smart sleep off.
The three smart sleep settings
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Smart sleep | Turns the feature on or off | Depends on the model |
| Smart sleep voltage | The cell voltage below which the BMS may sleep | 3.5 V on many LFP boards |
| Smart sleep time | How long the pack must stay idle before it sleeps | 24 h; 0 h disables sleep |
All three have to agree before anything happens. The voltage decides when the pack counts as low enough, the time decides how long it must stay idle, and the switch decides whether the feature runs at all. Not every model has all three: when you connect in JK Preset Studio, the editor checks which ones your board supports and marks the others as missing.
Smart sleep voltage
This is the setting people misread most often. A higher voltage makes the BMS sleep more readily. On LiFePO4, most of the useful capacity sits on a flat plateau around 3.2 to 3.3 V per cell, so a smart sleep voltage of 3.35 or 3.5 V means that an idle pack at almost any charge level will go to sleep after the timer runs out.
A lower voltage makes sleep a last line of defence: the BMS only sleeps when the pack is nearly empty and idle, which protects it from being drained to zero by its own consumption.
The parameter reference lists recommended ranges per chemistry for the smart sleep voltage.
Smart sleep time
The hours of idle time before sleep. "Idle" means the current stays below about 1 A in both directions. A trickle from a small standby load can keep the current under that limit, so a pack that powers only a router or an alarm system at night can still fall asleep. Setting the time to 0 hours disables sleeping, which JK recommends for batteries without a wake wire or button.
How to wake a sleeping JK BMS
A sleeping BMS looks dead: no LED, no display, no Bluetooth, no output. Wake it in one of these ways:
- Press the power button on the board, if your model has one.
- Use the display or activation switch. This is the most convenient option and the reason JK recommends fitting one.
- Connect a charger. Charging voltage at the terminals wakes the BMS. If the pack is already full, the charger must supply a voltage clearly above the battery voltage.
If none of these work, the BMS may have shut down at the power off voltage instead, which needs a charger to recover. The not charging or discharging guide covers the other reasons the output can be off, and the Bluetooth guide the reasons it will not connect.
Recommended smart sleep settings
Home storage with an inverter
An always-on inverter system should not sleep, because nobody may be there to wake it. Turn smart sleep off, or set the time to 0 hours. If you want a safety net against a total drain during a long outage, leave it on with a low voltage close to UVP and a long time, and make sure the pack has a button or display you can reach.
Camper, boat or seasonal storage
Here smart sleep earns its place. A pack that stands unused for weeks loses charge to the BMS itself, plus anything left connected. With smart sleep on, a voltage in the recommended range and the default 24 hours, the BMS shuts down after a day of rest and the pack keeps its charge much longer. Fit an activation switch so waking it is one press.
Small packs
The BMS consumption matters most on small batteries. A board that draws, for example, 30 mA while awake uses about 22 Ah a month. That is little for a 280 Ah pack, but it empties a 20 Ah pack in under a month. For small packs, smart sleep is worth enabling.
Common mistakes
- Smart sleep on, no wake button. The pack goes idle overnight, the BMS sleeps, and the inverter cannot restart it. Disable sleep or fit a switch.
- Reading the voltage backwards. A higher smart sleep voltage means more sleep, not less.
- Expecting a load to keep it awake. A load under about 1 A counts as idle.
- Copying another chemistry's value. LFP, NMC and LTO cells have very different voltages. Use the range for your cells, as the LiFePO4 settings guide does for LFP.
FAQ
Should I enable smart sleep on my JK BMS?
Enable it on batteries that stand unused for days and have a button, display or charger to wake them. Disable it on always-on inverter systems where nobody can wake the BMS quickly.
How do I turn off smart sleep?
Switch Smart sleep off in the settings, or set the smart sleep time to 0 hours. Both stop the BMS from sleeping. Write the change and read it back to check it was applied.
How much current does a JK BMS draw?
It depends on the model and on what is active, such as Bluetooth, the display and balancing. Check the datasheet of your board. Even a few tens of milliamps add up to many ampere-hours over a month, which is why sleep matters for stored packs.
Why does my JK BMS turn off by itself?
If it happens after a long idle period, smart sleep is the usual cause. If it happens when the cells are low, the power off voltage was reached. The Detail Log tells the two apart.
Connect your BMS to see its smart sleep settings and change them in one place.
